Lasers & Other Non-Ionising Radiations
News
MRI & Pacemeakers [21/01/2011] From MHRA - Since the publication of DB 2007(03) in 2007, a number of manufacturers have introduced pacemakers that are MR Conditional. We have previously advised that a person fitted with a heart pacemaker must not enter the MR CONTROLLED AREA (4.11.1.1, P42) but now advise:
- A person fitted with a heart pacemaker must not enter the MR Controlled Area.
- Exceptionally, a person fitted with an MR Conditional pacemaker [99,100] may enter the MR Controlled Area for scanning only if the MR operator has confirmed that all of the manufacturer’s stated conditions for safe operation are met.

Cosmetic Lasers & IPL [1/10/2010]
The Care Standards Act 2000 ceased to have effect on 1 October 2010. As a result, some of those who previously needed to register their use of lasers or intense-pulsed light (IPL) sources on people will no longer need to do so, including many cosmetic uses. See CQC guidance for details of who still needs to register in England.
In Wales, registration is still required for those undertaking non-surgical cosmetic treatments using a Class 3B or 4 Laser or IPL system (see Health Inspectorate Wales). In London, London Special Treatments Licensing, under the London Local Authorities Act 1991, may apply to some practices previously covered by CSA2000.
