Building Award (15/09/2011)
The Queen’s Centre for Oncology and Haematology at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust will be presented with the Macmillan Quality Environment Mark at midday on Saturday 24 September 2011. This award recognises and rewards good practice and high standards within the physical environment of a cancer care building.
Trust Chairman Scilla Smith and Chief Executive, Phil Morley will receive the award from Lady Halifax and Audrey Bradford, Macmillan General Manager for the East Midlands and Northern England. The presentation will take place as part of the Queen’s Centre Open Day when members of the public are invited to come to the Centre at Castle Hill Hospital to meet teams of healthcare professionals and have a look around the unit.
The award was developed with involvement from people affected by cancer who talked about what really made a difference to them when they were having treatment and support for their cancer.
The Queen’s Centre achieved a Level 5 Quality Award, which is the highest level awarded.
The Macmillan Quality Environment Mark will help to ensure that people affected by cancer are treated and supported in physical environments of uniformly high quality. The scheme is open to any healthcare providers.

Gary Liney ,PhD, our specialist Principal Physicist for Oncology Imaging and Radiotherapy Physics at the Queen’s Centre for Oncology, publishes a new edition of his A-Z guide to MRI.
|
This second edition of Gary Liney’s MRI from A-Z, much expanded from the first edition, is both a reflection of and an apt companion for the dramatic growth in the field of MRI. The MRI trainee and the extensively experienced MRI practitioner alike will find this A-Z of the field, with 1,300 entries and 100 illustrations, to be an indispensable reference tool.
Providing the reader with concise, clear and eloquent definitions of MRI terminology, this book is both highly practical and a pleasure to read.

New Chair of IPEM RP SIG (20/07/2010)
From this autumn the new chairman of the Radiation Protection Special Interest Group of the Institute of Physics & Engineering in Medicine will be Mr John Saunderson of the Radiation Physics Department.
The main activities of the RP SIG are:
- To organise scientific or educational meetings to encourage debate and to disseminate information regarding developments in best practice in radiation protection and the relevant legislation.
- To publish news and information through the IPEM newsletter and website.
- To review and comment on draft legislation, guidance and information on behalf of IPEM.
- To produce reports as appropriate.
- To lead or contribute to working parties as appropriate.
- To promote evidence-based practice in radiation protection.

28/01/2010 First Intraocular Brachytherapy Treatments in Hull
The Radiation Physics Department is participating in a new trial in Hull to test the effectiveness of brachytherapy in the treatment of age-related wet macular degeneration (AMD). The treatment uses beta particles from a Sr90/Y90 source to treat the lesion.
See HEY Hospitals for more information on this pioneering new treatment.
